Geothermal Open Loop
This is another 3D mockup that we produced to show a Geothermal Open Loop. As you can see, the system has a supply and a return pipe going down and tying into the ground water source.
Some people don’t realize that this is a non-consumptive use of ground water. You aren’t sucking it up and using it, you are just pumping it up, removing a little bit of heat, then putting it right back at the same depth as you got it from.
Open Loop Ground Loops are the most efficient Geothermal Ground Loops because of this large pool of thermal mass to pull from. An open loop will always have the same entering water temperature, so the efficiencies throughout the year will all be higher than closed loop systems.
